Unoccupied Premises During Lockdown

As a general rule, unoccupancy clauses within insurance policies allow for premises to be left unoccupied for a period of up to 30 days without notification and without the imposition of any special terms being applied.
Despite many premises being left unoccupied during lockdown for periods much longer than this, insurers are still prepared to provide full cover providing the following conditions are met:-
• The premises are mandated to close according to the latest COVD lockdown rules
• The premises are inspected at least once every 7 days
• All trade waste materials are removed from the inside the premises with no accumulation of waste being allowed in adjoining yards or spaces
• The premises are secured at all times by putting all fastenings and protections (including locking devices and any alarm protections) into full and effective operation
• The gas, water and electricity supplies are turned off at the mains (except electricity required to maintain any fire or security alarm systems or water and heating systems for sprinklered premises)
